Overview of Data Collection Code

Since the data architecture behind the WoW Armory has been completely overhauled, shifting from an XML-based format to a JSON API, it no longer makes sense to present our old data architecture in detail as this would simply be confusing to researchers looking to gather data in the new format. Instead, we will provide a functional overview for historical record-keeping purposes.

In the old Armory system, every character’s data page (provided in the HTML front-end) had a corresponding XML-based page providing the underlying variables. Our data collection tool scraped the XML data from these pages for all the active characters in our database. Since Armory data was updated on a daily basis (if the character was active the day before), our data collection tool also had a 24-hour interval. Once the XML data was collected, XPath was used to parse the name-value XML data into a MySQL database.
